Virtual slides are particularly useful to present small biopsies to many
participants. Slide seminars in subspecialties traditionally relying on
small biopsy samples or needle biopsies such as hematopathology, dermatopathology,
hepatopathology or nephropathology can now be offered to a large audience.
The decision about which cases are to be presented in a course no longer
depends on the availability of a large amount of representative material.
Significant differences in appearance between sections due to small or
focal lesions are no longer a problem. Furthermore, digitization of the
histological glass slide is much less time consuming and expensive than
the production of a traditional slide set. The slides may be discussed
simultaneously by many different users without restrictions in time or place.
Besides teaching, virtual slides may also be used for diagnostic or research purposes.
